BEST RESORTS
wwwMost ski trips contain a mixture of abilities with either school teachers and students, parents and children or friends of different skiing backgrounds. Hence the resorts that can offer something for everyone are to be preferred. With many fit athletic youngsters progress can be fast and so the possibility to move on to harder slopes at the end of the holday should be considered

Many beginners get a real thrill by being able to ski back to their accomodation or transport at lunchtime and the end of the day.Traditional Tyrolean resorts suffer in this respect although they make up for it in ambiance and atmosphere.

Piste-maps and street plans are available online and should be examined to see if there is a blue or green run back to where you want to finish your skiing. Also check the height of the resort where these runs finish and if it is less than 1200 metres there are likely to be problems with snow cover on these runs at any time during season, even with the help of artificial snow making. Also remember that these runs can be busy and icy at the end of the day when everyone is coming down the mountain and you have very tired legs. So the more pistes that go to base-camp the better.

Some resorts have runs that fan-out from a central base and you are less likely to get lost in these resorts as there is nowhere else to go. Others have runs that finish miles along the valley in different towns and even different countries !! Hence it is much more easy to get separated from your group in these ski areas.

Your group should always have a contingency plan to cover a skier getting lost. The simplest is for the lost skier to stay in the same place and the group to retrace its tracks to find them. This may mean walking back up the piste if the lifts are closing at the end of the day. Ask your instructor to clarify the plan.
